An object identifier (OID) is a globally unique identifier that can be used for many purposes. It's commonly seen in SNMP, LDAP, crytography, and HL7. An OID can be used to identify practically anything.
IANA assigns an OID to anyone on a first-come, first-serve basis. The OID can be sub-assigned by the owner by adding additional components to the end. For example, if I am assigned OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.62892.42.43.0, I can assign 1.3.6.1.4.1.62892.42.43.0.1 or 1.3.6.1.4.1.62892.42.43.0.2 or 1.3.6.1.4.1.62892.42.43.0.n where n is less than or equal to the maximum value of an unsigned integer.
Use the form below to request a new OID for your personal use in the heirarchy of my IANA-assigned space: 1.3.6.1.4.1.62892.42.43
